Professor John Snowden, Sheffield 30th October 2022

Paul's passing is truly heartbreaking and he will be dearly missed by many in the Haematology and BMT community. Paul was undoubtedly a rising star, having been London trainee, an Anthony Nolan medical officer for three years and completing a very successful MD (Res) at UCL (supervised by Alejandro Madrigal, Karl Peggs, Chloe Anthias and myself) related to immunity and vaccination in BMT patients. This experience and expertise led Paul to become the natural choice as Chair of the BSBMTCT Vaccination committee in 2019. With the subsequent pandemic, Paul’s insight and collaborative leadership proved invaluable for our BMT community, working with Thushan de Silva, Kim Orchard and others in BSBMTCT and Anthony Nolan to generate vaccination guidelines and the BMT/CART components of the large OCTAVE studies of Covid vaccines in immunocompromised patients – all of which contributed significantly to the knowledge base and information exchange in the rapidly changing situation for our clinical and patient community during the pandemic. In amongst all of this, Paul was such a kind, thoughtful, gentle and modest human being and a caring doctor. His talents were diverse. He once visited me in Sheffield combining examination of medical students with a rock climbing trip in Derbyshire. I’m sure there are so many more good things that will be remembered by all who had the honour to know him. I will never forget him and my heart goes out to his family and friends.
