My earliest memory of Paul was taking him on the Brixton Climbers trip for beginners, to the Peak District. I believe I may have been his climbing partner on his first trad lead. I went up it first so that he could see how it was done, and then watched him do it, and I remember being slightly annoyed at how ridiculously well he did! Paul was a calm and fearless climber, and I was always impressed and somewhat jealous at how quickly he improved. Modest and kind, he was a true gentlemen with a lovely sense of humour, and one of the best people to have sat beside you on a very long drive to a field in the middle of nowhere.
