I'll always remember moving to London, knowing very few people and having a vague feeling I'd like to try out climbing. A few other clubs looked a bit intimidating and serious but BCC looked more friendly so I thought I'd try it out. I went to a club meetup to climb at The Brixton Recreation Centre. In hindsight, the wall was puny and not very good at all but it didn't matter - the people were awesome! Paul made me feel so welcome and seemed to put everyone at ease in his precense. I saw the instant friendliness and genuine care he showed to all those around him. The post-climb beer at Effra Social was always a great laugh with him too. Needless to say, I've been hooked on climbing ever since. Paul and others in BCC made it feel like a family. He taught me a lot over my time living in London and I'm thankful I got to get away on some memorable and amazing trips with him. He showed me how much community and love surrounded the sport which brought a lot of seemingly random people together and how in a big city there are always meaningful connections to be made and people who have a love for the outdoors and adventure who will support each other. Since moving to the Isle of Jersey, I now Chair and help run the Jersey Rock Climbing Club and I always hope to give any climber a fraction of what Paul gave to me and I'm sure so many others. I miss him dearly.
