Kelly & Ian Rainey 23rd October 2022

It's hard to believe how long it's been since LB told me over the phone that she'd met an interesting fellow while volunteering in South Africa. We knew it was serious when she later landed in England for her doctorate! We remember Paul as an adventurer (and bread-baker, way before everyone else was doing it) - always game for seeing something new and different. He and Lukxmi came to visit us in Beijing in 2009 - that's when you know who your true friends are - and I remember feeling distinctly proud and mildly worried dropping them off at the Great Wall, for them to find their way back alone. Later we were fortunate to attend their wedding in England, and they again came up to visit us in Scotland. Paul was certainly someone who made friendships a priority. We last saw Paul in January 2020 when they brought wee Indra to stay with us in Calgary, and we're so grateful they undertook the journey as new parents! Even then, when I suggested there was a little out-of-the-way spot for a beer and (Canadian) afternoon tea down a rutted, snowy road an hour into the mountains without cell reception and Indra in tow, he was game. Paul was thoughtful, and a good listener; he made you comfortable and at-ease. He will be deeply missed.
